Spending nearly one year in prison was a huge wake-up call for Teresa Giudice, to put it mildly.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey star had to quickly learn the ins and outs of life behind bars at the Danbury Correctional Facility after she began her sentence in January of 2015.

For starters? The mother of four had no idea that you still need legal tender to purchase goods while serving out her time.

“I thought when you go to prison you didn’t need any money,” the author of Turning the Tables: From Housewife to Inmate and Back Again told E! News’ Catt Sadler in an exclusive sit-down.

“Hello! You need money when you’re in prison. You need money unfortunately. Your family members send it in. You’re allowed to spend $180 every two weeks.”
